Acronym: NISOS
Duration: May 2023 – December 2025
Project Partners: The NHSOS project (ΝΗΣΟΣ) consortium brings together national partners from research, academia, and public authorities to drive its green-island vision: it includes research institutes (like the Hellenic Institute of Transport / CERTH), universities, and other public-sector actors working together to promote renewable energy, sustainable mobility, waste management, and digital platforms for energy-environmental data.
Project Overview:
A large-scale research program focusing on circular economy solutions for islands and sustainable maritime transport, supporting Greece’s green transition goals. The Green Islands & Green Shipping flagship action, implemented under the Greece 2.0 National Recovery and Resilience Plan, is a comprehensive program designed to accelerate the country’s green transition by fostering circular economy solutions for islands and advancing sustainable maritime transport. This large-scale initiative targets the decarbonization of the Greek island cluster by integrating renewable energy systems, promoting energy-efficient infrastructure, and modernizing the coastal fleet with low emission vessels. By connecting green port infrastructure with eco-friendly shipping practices, the program strengthens island self-sufficiency, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and supports climate adaptation. Funded through the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility, this flagship action exemplifies Greece’s commitment to achieving the European Green Deal objectives while catalyzing innovation, employment, and regional development in insular and maritime communities.
Key Outputs:
- Integrated methodologies for green island transformation, tailored to each island’s size, energy profile, and economic parameters
- Pilot implementation of proposed solutions on selected islands (Chalki, Kasterllorizo, Antikythera)
- Renewable energy and clean mobility solutions
- Waste and water management systems
- Sustainable tourism models and public services innovations
- Interactive green park and center of excellence in Chalki
Expected Impacts:
- Accelerated green transition of island communities
- Reduction in carbon footprint and fossil fuel dependence
- Strengthened local economies and job creation
- Increased national and EU policy alignment
- Replication and scalability across the Mediterranean
